Electricity Rates Raised By 66%

Sam Silva Wednesday, 15 February 2023 09:22 PM

If you collect all the outstanding dues from everyone and stop providing electricity to certain institutions. We were lighting up the entire Colombo city during Xmas without conserving the little we have. It’s the poor citizens who have to suffer the most.

Dee Wednesday, 15 February 2023 09:23 PM

Is it 66% across the board or slab based? better give the the correct picture. Because most idiots earning less than 150k think they are taxed 36%.(when they don’t even come close to paying the 36,% bracket)

Punchi Wednesday, 15 February 2023 09:44 PM

We generate the highest quality electricity in the world. The rates are justified

Government encourage culture like farming them must provide to us at loss to government Wednesday, 15 February 2023 09:48 PM

Government has to take on losses to support our public expected lifestyles. Many decade we expect government to suffer losses for our happy lives. We are unlike rich country were people pay for their actual costs. Here the government interest for most to do farming, then government must provide for such poor lifestyle. In better country they discourage poor income avenue like small scale farming, but if government wants it then them must provide electricity at loss to itself.

We culturally want to keep cake and eat it too Wednesday, 15 February 2023 09:50 PM

Government has to realise our culture. We expect more for nothing in exchange. Print money if necessary, give USA massive land for military base if necessary, sell the Colombo City port to India if necessary for 100 billion, after nationalising it from China, do whatever unfair thing to other country people, but provide for locals. That is the Sri Lankan way.

Fedup Wednesday, 15 February 2023 10:02 PM

What about adding a tax as well. Perhaps 70% that sounds about right. Whatever our bill costs we pay and extra 70% on that. Where are the promised reforms in the CEB? Will never happen will it. What a joke. I wish we were a part of India.

Nilmini Welivita Thursday, 16 February 2023 03:49 AM

We definitely can’t hold elections then. People won’t have enough energy to walk to the polling booth. Only the rich people should be allowed to vote.

Mohan Thursday, 16 February 2023 04:07 AM

My BP raised by 66%

Tissa Fernando Thursday, 16 February 2023 07:47 AM

Expect more protests to follow. NPP will be happy about this. Cost of living will explode again due to pathetic mismanagement of the energy sector for a long time. Petroleum and Electricity Board are the two highly mismanaged institutions by the politicians.

We need revolution not more talk Thursday, 16 February 2023 01:23 PM

Typical rabble rouser comments. Sri Lankan government businesses are relatively well managed compared to government business in India. Many Sri Lankan will start begging any relative overseas for money and we will survive fine. Supporters of government like yourselves are who want the terrible status quo instead of revolution.

cosala Thursday, 16 February 2023 08:35 AM

Thank you everyone who keeps voting… We love everyone…. We are happy to be 3rd world nation always… Cheers

How will it work out when prices are increased a the middle of the month? Will be to their advantage as they will calculate for the month

Sokrates Thursday, 16 February 2023 09:04 AM

This will rapidly accelerate Sri Lanka’s economic decline. In addition, it is also not justifiable that the customers are forced to pay off the debts of the CEB with this price increase, which arose from years of mismanagement, political influence, corruption and looting. Since the CEB is a monopolist and the customer has no choice between different providers, the current situation is constitutionally extremely questionable. Breaking up the CEB and selling it to several reputable international companies (not Chinese) is essential.

Jef Thursday, 16 February 2023 09:42 AM

Crazy stuff people are suffering yet alone to buy food medecine basic essential day to day last thing you want is increasing electricity 80% are population is poor

Ranjith Perera Thursday, 16 February 2023 10:00 AM

End of power cuts means intensify already self impose power cuts on themselves by subscribers ,as most subscribers can’t afford continuously basic electrical appliance like refrigerator to be on instead of switching off it for couple of hours for a day.

johan Thursday, 16 February 2023 10:03 AM

Can the opposition MPs use the RTI and get information from CEB and reveal to the public millions of unpaid bill by Mps private and official residences business places, relatives.CEB Trade Unions also must help to get this information and reveal public

Sam Thursday, 16 February 2023 10:33 AM

What next, 100% tax!!!!!! Those capable have to leave for greener pastures. Unfortunately this ultimately makes it worse for those not capable of leaving. No option though really, sorry. Have to provide for family and cannot do that here.

karumeta mehe ipadune Thursday, 16 February 2023 11:36 AM

No this is not enough, I think tariff should increase by 160 % and additional tax need to be added for same invoice, Country is in loss and our MP’s are the peoples only sacrifices everything on behalf of country so its not fair, even public has to bear some load

K. Kanthi Thursday, 16 February 2023 12:00 PM

Enough already. It is past time for all of us to leave our beloved Sri Lanka for good and relocate to another country (even Somalia or Ethiopia). How much longer will we be suffocated by corruption, mismanagement, and nepotism? Allow these corrupt politicians and their henchmen to continue looting what is left of the country (if there is any).

Sunil Thursday, 16 February 2023 01:30 PM

This was one of the most colossal frauds the country has ever seen, conducted keeping the AL students as hostage. Even then, the electricity fares will be revised every six months. People are now all too willing to teach this sordid regimes that they will never forget.

GHT Thursday, 16 February 2023 01:33 PM

The IMF orders are implemented step by step to DESTROY the UNITED SRI LANKA.
