The postal voting for the 2023 local government election has been postponed until further notice, Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Rathnayake announced today.

He said the postal voting for the local government election was scheduled to begin tomorrow at 1,116 centers.

The local government election is scheduled to be held on March 9.

The decision was made as ballot papers for postal ballots were not available due to unavoidable reasons beyond the control of the Commission. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

All kind of election should be held on time. If the government deliberately delays it it will be a bad precedence to the entire election system

If the electronic media reports are correct, the government printer’s decision was taken after being summoned to the presidential secretariat. Also Rs.20 billion allocated to buy paddy and Finance ministry secretary releases 10 billion today. Now its high time the “supreme” power takes the cane.

This is a land like no other where dictatorial decisions are openly unleashed in a so-called democratic country. This is an excuse to thwart the LG elections taking place in March and represents a more sinister precedent for future elections.

Why not a foreign country embassy announce that they will give equivalent dollars of Rs. 10 billion to Election Commission via the SL Government to conduct the election if funds are the issue?

If Sri Lankan money is printed by a private company under strict security measures, why not ballot papers are printed by them and the bill is settled by a foreign government as an assistance to SL

If the treasury has no money to release to the EC, that means the budget passed by the parliament is failed. Eventually the validity of parliament is also a question.
