Telecommunication Providers Up Service Charges, VAT

Randula Jayamaha Saturday, 03 September 2022 06:10 PM

VAT rate only goes up 12% to 15% an then mobile call charges go up by 20%. There is definitely price gouging happening. Maybe for some services the depreciation of the rupee has in impact but for mobile phone calls within our country 20% too much. The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission is either failing to scrutinize or how can they allow it! Also, why the sudden effect of the rupee depreciation, that happened months ago. More excuse for exorbitant profits more likely.

The TRC must recruit high calibre people to carefully scrutinise requests and these must be in the public domain for public review and appraisal. There should be complete transparency in the approval process.

For Telco sector 20% is not enough? How can they earn in rupees and invest in $? All the investment goes out of SL and the are damn expensive? Otherwise they need to stop investing and control the usage to maintain the capacity

It is good move, the people waste so much time and data in forwarding all crap on social media bcoz it is cheap.

Plenty people even watch news segments put on Youtube at their convenience so this would affect their use of doing that on their phones. The Youth who protest rely a lot on social media or other internet based communication, and I now wonder if they is a ruse by the government to reduce criticism of on social media. Really the use of social media is becoming a Human Right for the youth. Just like electricity and piped water became an essential in generation past. School students too rely on remote learning some days and they too rely on internet and broadband and will be effected.

People who use internet and make money they will anyway will make money. There are educational packages and it should be given in concession price. Rest should be up. When the internet is so cheap the people/children waste lot of time and get wasted.

All sins goes to Ranil. Saturday, 03 September 2022 10:04 PM

Thanks to Ranil we are living in a wealthy country and we can afford to pay these increases in charges of essentials and services. People must bow down to Ranil/ Rajapakshas without agitating under the PTA regulations. Politicians who put this country into this crisis are living happily while normal masses are suffering.

Price increase and taxes by Network providers will hurt the IT Industry, particularly Tech Startups. Therefore, Strict regulation is needed by the TRC. I do not care about Social Media Users wasting Data for nothing. Think about our Tech Industry and Startups, who put Time, Money and Energy to Transform Technology to make life easy Unlike other Industries Network Providers make huge profits by the Air. Proof is that your can see the number of Assets they own around the country.

So even student’s online classes are going to get a hit. At lease give the students / teachers / schools subjects in DVD / Pendrive etc form so that lessons could be thought at ease to an extent and cut down the innocent students / Parents / teachers / Schools internet expenditure may be another expenditure.

SLT is owned only 50.50% by government. I just checked on SLT site and both mobile and fixed line calls going up by 20%. Internet based service maybe can understand if goes up because that is dependent on rest of the world, but local phone calls price going up also by 20% is too much. Especially with VAT going up by 3% being applied too. Government as majority shareholder of SLT should find out what is going on, as the general public will finds this another price increase affecting their day to day unchanging earnings.
