One of the benefits of studying in Leicester is the fact that there are a variety of accommodation options to pick from. Particularly since I started university, I’ve realized the variety of factors that were considered when deciding which accommodation to choose. So, should you be considering a place in the near future, here are a few things I’d recommend taking into consideration.
1. Consider your budget
I had a figure of the amount I would be able to afford for accommodation each month, and I also was able to envision an optimal (lower) number in mind. Knowing the amount you can pay for accommodation is helpful in evaluating other aspects and weighing options in the future. For example, if you’re happy to stay in a shared space, you might consider getting a twin room as a way to save some money or if you don’t mind walking a bit more (or getting on public transport/cycling…) to campus, then perhaps your trade-off might be staying in student accommodation Leicester which is a bit further away.
2. Consider the distance
This was for me quite an important factor since I wanted to be close to certain areas I was certain I would likely go to on a regular routine. In addition to determining how far the residence is from campus, it is also important to think about the location in particular- are you looking to be near certain railway lines, for instance? If you’re looking to live near to the campus or specific facilities , this can be an effective way to narrow down the options for accommodation.
3. Consider the social scene
Particularly as a freshman I considered this a lot, and finally decided it was time to move in a place that was social enough to me (not too social, but an area that allows conversation and getting to know new people). However some people may prefer living in halls where people tend to be much more independent. It is also important to think about the size of the roomand the social atmosphere is also influenced by the number of students who stay in the accommodation.
4. Think about the facilities available.
Different kinds of accommodations offer different advantages, so determining the best facilities is an individual decision. If the ability to cook the majority or all of your meals sounds appealing, and you want to cook your own meals, then halls that cater for self (or rooms) are the best way to take. However I was hoping to be able to cook occasionally but not be forced to, so selecting a hall where meals was served on a regular basis was perfect for me. Additionally certain halls may have bathrooms or kitchens that are shared that are smaller in size…these are just a few of the things I was thinking about when choosing my lodgingbasing my decision on my experience in the past or the things I was looking to test.
5. Select the type you prefer for accommodation
As I mentioned, the benefit of studying at Leicester is that you have access to plenty of choice. It is possible to live in halls at universities, inter-collegiate halls (useful for those who want to connect with people from different universities or wish to have a clearer distinction between work and home’) or in private accommodations. Beginning your research earlier will give you time to explore the variety of possibilities and weigh all relevant aspects for you. Hopefully, it will get you the ideal living space!
Best of luck to those who is thinking of or looking into accommodation. If your like me, and find yourself with an organized plan for finding the ideal accommodation, but with an unorganized booking process I’m hoping it is a success!
